What makes the Arabic language so unique?

  • The Arabic alphabets are not based on alphabets but rather characters called an abjad. These do not have a consonant or vowel category which makes the language very complex.  However, the vowels-cum-consonants are denoted using vowel marks.
  • Arabic belongs to the Afro-Asiatic family of languages that were widespread between the Middle East and prominent parts of Africa such as Egypt. The language consists of 6 branches and 300 living dialects, accumulating 350 million native Arabic speakers.
  • There are custom sounds in the Arabic language that is unheard of by English speakers. For example,ح sounds like the h in “hollow.” The sound is created similar to blowing a mist on your phone screen.
  • Many borrowed words in English are from Arabic. Furthermore, the words have also found their way into romance languages such as Spanish and French. These words are algorithm, algebra, cotton, and alcohol. Even the “zero” was introduced by Muslim mathematicians.
  • Arabic is a language from the sixth century. However, previously, it was called the Safiatic dialect that was spoken by Syro-Arabian nomads in the first century.
  • Arabic belongs to the Semitic group of languages including Hebrew, Aramaic, and Ethiopic. Furthermore, Arabic also influences its sister languages such as Kurdish, Pashto, Urdu, and Farsi. As a result, individuals from these languages can make a limited sense of foreign words.
  • Arabic has a very engaging history mostly based on literature. Arabic poetry dates to 16 centuries ago, found in the Arabian Peninsula.
  • Furthermore, Arabic has a challenging methodology to create new words based on their common root. As an example, a three-word “k-t-b” is the root for all words associated with writing. Words include Kitab, meaning book, and maktab, which means a place of learning.
  • Arabic is spoken in many countries with their own dialects. However, these dialects do not have a common understanding since it was mostly oral in pre-Islamic times. As a result, two individuals from different Arabic dialects will not understand each other.
