The Serbian language is an adaptation of Cyrillic alphabets. It was derived from Serbo-Croatian in 1818 by the linguist Vuk Karadžić. The Serbian nation adopted the Cyrillic language in the traditional sense primarily. However, it was later adopted in the official capacity through its Constitution.
The language is based on 24 alphabets from the original Cyrillic letters. However, when the Constitution was developed, the letters я, щ, or ъ were taken out. Instead, a new Latin alphabet, j, was introduced. The Serbian also has unique characters added to its script. These are Ђ, Љ, Ћ, Њ, and Џ.
